FRANKFURT (MNI) – The financial crisis has had a “deep impact”,
which will continue, and unemployment will remain high, European Central
Bank Governing Council member Nout Wellink said Wednesday.

“The crisis has had a deep impact on our societies, and this will
continue, unemployment will remain high, for years in a row,” the head
of the Dutch National told an audience at an evening lecture here.

Turning specifically to the Eurozone, Wellink said that in order to
maintain the confidence of markets and the public, it is “essential” for
governments to institute credible fiscal consolidation programs.
