BRUSSELS (MNI) – Spain doesn’t need financial assistance along the
same lines as Greece, European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary
Affairs Olli Rehn said on Wednesday, adding that Greece is a unique
case.
After Greece was given an aid package from the Eurozone and the
International Monetary Fund worth E110 billion over three years, markets
speculated that other high-debt countries such as Portugal and Spain
could need similar assistance.
Rehn said that wasn’t the case.
“No, we will not do it,” he told reporters, when asked if a similar
mechanism would be offered to Spain. “Because there is no need to
propose” such help.
“I want to underline that Greece is a unique case in the European
Union,” he said, pointing out that Greece was the only country to
provide inconsistent statistics.
“Greece is a unique and particular case and there is no other
euro-area state like Greece,” Rehn said.
