LONDON (MNI) – EU President Herman Van Rompuy has raised the
political stakes as the EU continues to put pressure on Ireland to
accept emergency funding, the BBC has reported.
Van Rompuy said he was “very confident” the problems could be
overcome.
But he added: “We all have to work together in order to survive
with the eurozone, because if we don’t survive with the eurozone we will
not survive with the European Union.”
This morning, Irish officials continued to reject the need for
help, with the European Affairs Minister Dick Roche insisting that
Ireland had enough funding to survive well into H2 2011.
But EU officials worry that market speculation will shift to
Portugal and, still more worryingly, Spain if Ireland continues
to resist EU help.
