BERLIN (MNI) – The German government remains confident that a
compromise about raising the debt limit can still be reached in the
United States, a spokesman said Monday.

“Not only in recent weeks and months, but naturally also in recent
days we have followed the debate in America with great interest,”
government spokesman Christoph Steegmans said at a regular press
conference here. “We continue to remain confident that a compromise can
be reached.”

U.S. congressional leaders over the weekend missed a self-imposed
deadline for reaching a debt agreement that would prevent a federal
default.
