ATHENS (MNI) – Amid mounting tensions in the streets of Athens,
Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou called Wednesday for national
unity on the part of all political parties and pledged to pursue efforts
to overcome the economic and financial crisis.

With the country paralyzed by a general strike in the public and
private sectors, there are reports of riots in the capital. Some 100,000
demonstrators have surrounded the parliament, where the medium-term
fiscal plan is tabled for discussion today.

The journalists strike has been annulled ahead of an emergency
meeting between the prime minister and President Karolos Papoulias.

There are rumors that Papandreou will call early elections, but
nothing is certain. He might once again call for an emergency meeting of
all the party leaders in order to get a consensus.

All scenarios are possible, since around 15 government party MPs
are threatening to resign. One of them already submitted his resignation
late Tuesday.
