BERLIN (MNI) – Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou said he
supports the move towards stiffer discipline for EU members states that
breach the fiscal rules in the Stability and Growth Pact.
“If we had these rules already in the past we would not have gotten
in the situation in which we are now,” he told German weekly Die Zeit in
an interview pre-released Wednesday.
Papandreou said he also shared the view recently expressed by
Germany’s Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble that the EU Treaties had
to be changed. “We need stiffer rules and as much transparency as
possible,” he said.
“The Europe that I want would have a common monetary fund, a common
financial transaction tax, and a Europe-wide carbon dioxide tax,” the
prime minister said.
