News out a short while ago but still unconfirmed 28 Nov
Republic of Ireland's deputy PM Frances Fitzgerald's resignation over her link to proposed smear campaign against a police detective should prevent a no confidence vote.
She has told the Irish cabinet she will leave office later today to avert a snap election and in turn weaken PM Varadkar's position as he goes into crucial Brexit negotiations at December's EU summit in December, senior sources in Dublin have told the media.
Those sources have also told The Guardian once she has gone from office the opposition will not proceed with a vote of no confidence it had tabled for 8pm, which had the potential to bring down Varadkar's minority government.
The political crisis in Dublin deepened last night when documents emerged that appeared to show Fitzgerald had been aware of a proposed smear campaign against a detective who warned of corruption in the Irish police force.
The Irish border issues remain a point of real Brexit contention and a snap election would have muddied the icy waters further.
GBP pairs unfazed by the latest developments at this time.
