ROME (MNI) – Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Monti is expected Friday
to announce a large economic liberalization package that will affect a
number of sectors, including taxis, pharmacies, local public transport
and the postal service.

The government’s aim is to increase competition. It plans, for
example, to boost the number of taxi licenses. But taxi drivers and
trades unions are angry about the move. Taxi drivers say there are
enough taxis and competitors are not welcome. Taxi unions have called a
national strike for January 23 and may take action today as well.

Monti is expected to hold a press conference today following a
cabinet meeting, sometime after 0900 GMT/0400 ET.
