TOKYO (MNI) – The value of construction orders received in February
by the 50 largest contractors in Japan fell 20.3% from a year earlier to
Y730.3 billion, marking the first year-on-year drop in three months, the
Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said on
Wednesday.

The February drop reversed from +15.7% in January but was still
much smaller than the record drop of -42.8% marked in July 2009.

The breakdown for the latest month follows (on-year changes in the
previous month in parentheses):

— Domestic private sector: -20.2% y/y at Y476.1 billion (vs.
+9.5%), marking the first y/y drop in two months.

— Public sector: -12.8% y/y at Y216.0 billion (vs. +13.7%), also
marking the first y/y drop in two months.

— Overseas: A loss of Y8.3 billion; no y/y comparison available as
contracts had been cancelled (vs. +1,074.7%), the first decline in four
months.
