December 14 is election day for the lower house in Japan.

Here is a rundown of what’s coming up leading to the election, and what happens after

  • Official campaigning starts on December 2
  • On December 8 we get the revised Q3 GDP data. the preliminary figures were shockingly bad, confirming another dip into recession for Japan (they have more dips than a Greek restaurant)
  • December 14 – election day …. and following within days the Diet will sit to choose a new PM. PM Abe has said he will resign if his coalition doesn’t gain a majority (but he is expected to win and therefore stay on)
  • The parliament will be back again for a new session in middle of January
