Brussels (MNI) – Expelling countries from the Eurozone could
exacerbate the financial crisis and create massive risks, Jean-Claude
Juncker, president of the Eurogroup and Prime Minister of Luxembourg,
told the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Tuesday.

“I must say that I am absolutely and vehemently opposed to the idea
that one or two member states could be forced to leave the Eurozone,”
Juncker said in response to a question from a Czech member of the
European Parliament.

“That would not solve anything, and I would go further by saying it
would further exacerbate the problem not just for those one or two
countries but also the Eurozone as a whole,” he said.

“Such a proposal would contain massive risks,” he added.

Juncker suggested that despite the crisis, which has laid bare the
huge divergences between the Eurozone’s weaker and stronger economies,
he still favors forging ahead with the EU’s grand plan for ongoing euro
area expansion.

“The EU won’t be complete until all member states have adopted the
euro,” he said.
