Since the beginning of 2008, the economy has contracted by about 3pc – the joint worst performance of any G7 country, except Italy. Of course, the Office of Budget Responsibility (OBR) forecasts a pick-up. It always does. It has also radically reduced its forecast for growth this year and next. That is also true to form. Why anyone takes these forecasts seriously defeats me.
