BERLIN (MNI) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday said
there is no rift in her CDU/CSU-FDP coalition government over the
compromise reached with France on a reform of the EU Stability and
Growth Pact.
“We have talked about it in the cabinet, we did not dispute about
it,” Merkel said. The compromise with France “is the joint position of
the German government,” she stressed.
Asked about critical remarks of ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet
about the Stability Pact reform compromise, Merkel said she could not
comment because she did not know these comments.
The chancellor was speaking at a joint press conference with
Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip after a meeting of the two in
Berlin.
Ansip said he supported the position of Germany on the Stability
Pact reform. He once more affirmed that his government “will go on with
sound fiscal policies” after entering the Eurozone on January 1.
