Auto tariffs a problem
Canada wants to know it will be exempt from Section 232 national security tariffs on autos as a part of a NAFTA deal, Bloomberg reports.
"Canadian negotiators are seeking assurances the country will be exempt, or given some sort of preferential treatment, in Section 232 tariff investigations, three officials familiar with talks said. One of the officials said the 232 issue is emerging as the biggest problem, while another said it's among a handful of key issues," Bloomberg's Josh Wingrove writes.
The idea is that there is little value in any free trade agreement if it can be immediately violated due to vague national security provisions.
