An early article in the Nikkei today on wage increases in Japan.

  • The first round of results from spring labor negotiations were announced Thursday by leading business lobby Keidanren
  • The wage growth comes to 2.59% for 62 large companies with at least 500 on staff, the biggest boost since 1998
  • This translates to an added 8,502 yen ($70.85) in monthly pay, exceeding 8,000 yen also for the first time in 17 years
  • Both automatic seniority-based raises and negotiated base pay bumps are included in this tally
