Great editorial in the New York Times today about the arrest of Kostas Vaxevanis after he published a list of prominent Greeks with Swiss bank accounts.

He was arrested on Sunday and will go on trial Thursday.

Mainstream Greek politicians have been shamefully quick to strip basic social services from the country’s poorest and most vulnerable citizens. And they have been shamefully slow at probing possible tax evasion by the rich and well connected.

The handling of this case is a major red flag that points, once again, to corruption at the highest levels. It’s absolutely shameful.

What I think is under-reported is how little the Troika has pushed to crack down on tax evasion, which makes you wonder if the conspiracy extends beyond Greece’s borders.
