Barrack Obama has always relied on the core of his constituency, the US press corp, to protect him from turmoil. They dutifully did so during the presidential campaign but now that Obama is in office, he is beginning to lose some of his “base”. Paul Krugman and Maureen Dowd of the New York Times are two noted examples and even the AP this weekend casts a questioning eye at some of Obama’s early moves, going so far to call the latest round of bad news “the Obama economy”.

Expect Obama to back-burner health-care and climate change in the weeks ahead and refocus on the economy or face a much bigger backlash than he’s gotten to date.
