There is a bigger cautionary tale to be taken from this and other presidential controversies of the last 30 years: There used to be an innate respect for the office of the presidency. That respect was badly eroded in the wake of Watergate and it accelerated after the Bush v. Gore conclusion to the 2000 election. Delegitimizing the president has become de rigor and it has done lasting damage to the institution and the country. Let’s hope it stops.
