Tsipras addressed the nation earlier on TV and said that deposits are safe
If Greece is going down then Tsipras is going to go down fighting
He addressed the Greek public earlier stating that bank deposits are safe and that wages and pensions will be guaranteed. He then went on the offensive by saying that the Bank of Greece has been forced to recommend bank holidays and capital controls, and blamed the ECB and other institutions for trying to obstruct the referendum next week. He said that this is an insult that shames European democracy
He added that he has repeatedly asked for a bailout extension to take Greece beyond the June 30th deadline adding that this would Allow the ECB to restore the ELA.
Via a series of tweets he set upon the ECB and Eurogroup;
- The recent decisions of the Eurogroup & ECB have only one objective: to attempt to stifle the will of the Greek people
- They will not succeed. The very opposite will occur: the Greek people will stand firm with even greater wilfulness
- In the coming days, what's needed is patience and composure. The bank deposits of the Greek people are fully secure
- In these critical hours, we must remember that the only thing to fear is fear itself
Meanwhile, despite the fact that the banks and ATM's will be closed, that's not stopping people from hitting the cash points
