LONDON (MNI) – UK June mortgage approvals rose to their highest
levels for a year, according to the latest British Bankers Association
data.

The number of approvals for house purchases in June climbed to
31,747 from 30,803 in May, the highest outturn since the 33,784 recorded
in June 2010.

June remortgaging approvals rose to 24,080 from 21,967 in May.

Mortgage activity is still low by historic standards, with June
approvals down 6% on a year ago.

“Banks continue to lend for house purchase but the weak mortgage
market is self-evident, although some growth is coming from the
buy-to-let sector to meet demand for rental properties,” BBA statistics
director, David Dooks, said.

The personal lending data showed overdraft lending nudged up, with
the amount outstanding rising 1.8% on the month in June to stg9.473
billion, amount to a net rise of just stg221 million on the month.

Net personal loans and overdraft rose just stg74 million on the
month.

The data remain consistent with a picture of subdued credit growth.
