US Climate Prediction Center cuts odds

A US forecasting agency lowered the probability of El Nino later this year to 45% from 50% a month ago. The weather-altering effect is formed by temporarily warmer Pacific currents.

The most-recent bout of El Nino contributed to a drought and the weather changes have ripple effects throughout the continent that effect demand for heating fuels. It also helps moderate the formation of hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico.

"There are some situations that are very muddy" forecaster Michelle L'Heureux told Bloomberg. "We're still leaving the door open here, but the case is not overwhelming at this point."
