–Senior Republican On Tax Panel Warns Geithner Not To ‘Play Games’
–Rep. Camp: Treasury Secretary ‘Clearly’ Said Yes, Before Hedge
By John Shaw
WASHINGTON (MNI) – Rep. David Camp, the top Republican on the House
Ways and Means Committee, told Market News International Thursday that
he believes that Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner made a clear, public
pledge to release Treasury’s next foreign exchange and international
economic report on Oct. 15.
“I was very careful to ask him a point blank question and made a
point of mentioning to him the October due date. And he answered yes,
the report will come out then,” Camp said.
“I noticed that he then started to hedge, by using words like in a
“timely manner.” I decided not to ask him again. I decided to trust his
clear answer. The spirit of his answer was clear. I sure hope he isn’t
going to play games on this,” Camp said.
Camp is in line to become the next chairman of the House Ways and
Means Committee is Republicans win control of the House.
Congressional Republicans have criticized Treasury for releasing
the foreign exchange report, which was due on April 15, in July.
Camp said he wanted to secure a commitment from Geithner that the
next report will not be delayed for several months.
A Treasury Department spokeswoman said Geithner committed only to a
“timely” delivery, not necessarily in October.
