BRUSSELS (MNI) – The European Commission is examining a request
from Poland and eight other European Union member states to alter the
way that their public debt levels are calculated, European Commission
President Jose Manuel Barroso said on Wednesday.

Last month, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia,
Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia and Sweden wrote to the European
institutions, asking if pension reforms they had undertaken could be
reflected differently in their statistics.

“We have received in fact the letter,” Barroso told reporters after
a meeting with new Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski in Brussels.

“We are carefully examining it… and we will come to a decision,”
he said.
