BERLIN (MNI) – Germany’s key engineering sector will likely not
suffer heavy fallout in the short run due to the disasters in Japan, the
VDMA engineering association argued Wednesday in a statement issued
jointly with the Economics Ministry and the IG Metall trade union.
“Any impact from the catastrophe on the German engineering sector
cannot be fully assessed,” the statement cautioned.
“However, grave production losses do not exist at the moment. In
the view [of the VDMA, Economics Ministry and IG Metall] they are not to
be expected in the short run.”
The statement was issued after a meeting of Economics Minister
Rainer Bruederle with VDMA President Thomas Lindner and IG Metall board
member Wolfgang Rohde here.
Lindner told reporters after the meeting that parts of the German
engineering industry have already reached pre-crisis levels again. Other
parts, however, were still distinctly below these levels, he cautioned.
