STRASBOURG, France (MNI) – Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said
Wednesday that the Greek rescue package is urgently needed and should
not be delayed by Eurozone finance ministers.
“I think it is necessary right now,” Monti said at a press
conference here following a speech to the European Parliament. “Greece
needs to meet the conditions and they are doing everything they can.”
Monti was responding to press reports that the Greek bailout
package could be delayed, in whole or in part, until after parliamentary
elections expected to take place in April.
Monti said that conditions being imposed on Greece were “perhaps
excessive,” but that they reflected the Greek governments’ previous
policy errors.
Monti, who is also Italy’s finance minister, declined to comment on
the telephone conference to be held today among Eurogroup finance
ministers to discuss the Greek bailout.
