TOKYO (MNI) – The value of construction orders received in April by
the 50 largest contractors in Japan fell 25.0% from a year earlier to
Y421.96 billion, marking the first year-on-year drop in two months, the
Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said on Monday.
The April drop reversed from +42.3% in March. It compared with the
record drop of -42.8% marked in July 2009.
The breakdown for the latest month follows (on-year changes in the
previous month in parentheses):
— Domestic private sector: -31.3% y/y at Y288.45 billion (vs.
+75.3%), marking the first y/y drop in two months.
— Public sector: -18.9% y/y at Y69.38 billion (vs. -14.3%),
marking the third consecutive y/y drop.
— Overseas: +81.2% y/y at Y21.15 billion (vs. +379.9%), marking
the second y/y rise in a row.
