JAPAN DATA: Domestic shipments of audio and visual electronic
appliances totaled Y192.3 billion, down 42.0% on year in September,
posting y/y falls for two months in a row, data released by the Japan
Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association showed.
The September decline followed -26.2% in August and +16.9% y/y in July.
TV shipments stood at 1.138 million units, down 47.9% y/y in September,
showing the second consecutive monthly y/y fall, following -26.2% in
August and +64.8% in July. Many shoppers rushed to retail stores to buy
TVs with digital tuners before July 24, when the government terminated
analog broadcasting services. This caused a pullback in demand for
consumer electronics in both August and September.
