BHP have informed the exchange that they are about to make an announcement. There is speculation that it may involve a renewed attempt to reach a deal with its big rival, Rio Tinto. Those selling AUD on the back of the Rio/Chinalco news might be reconsidering their position.
On other equity markets, both the Nikkei and Kospi have opened up about 1%.
