LONDON (MNI) – UK car registrations were up on the year in October,
but the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said it expected
market conditions to remain challenging.

New car registrations were up 2.6% on the year in October but over
the first 10 months of the year were down 4.5% on the same period in
2010.

October is normally a quiet month for registrations, as it follows
the plate change month of September. New car registrations were down
0.8% on the year in September.

The SMMT has forecast registrations will end 2011 down 5.0% on 2010.

“We expect market conditions to remain challenging,” Paul Everitt,
SMMT Chief Executive, said.
