Close special election takes place Georgia's sixth congressional district

Voters in Georgia vote tonight for a vacant seat in the House of Representatives in what will be seen as an early test of how Republicans have handled power so far.

The seat became available when Tom Price vacated to become Trump's Secretary of Health and Human Services. It features Republican Karen Handel against Democrat Jon Ossoff.

Each candidate has spent more than $50 million on the race, making it the most-expensive in US history.

It's been held by Republicans -- including Newt Gingrich -- since 1979. In November, Tom Price easily won with 61.7% of the vote compared to 38.3% for Democrat Rodney Stooksbury.

But Democratic donors sensed an opportunity and have poured money into the campaign. In the first round of voting, Ossoff won 48.1% of the vote and Handel 19.8% but the next five-best candidates were Republicans and they are now scratched from the ballot.

Polls over the past two weeks show an extremely tight race. One had Ossoff up 3 points, one had Handel up 2 points but they have all been within the margin of error.

The polls are open now and close at 7 pm ET. The first results are expected to begin crossing 30 minutes later but it probably won't be until close to midnight before the tally is known.

There is also a vote for South Carolina's 5th district today but it's viewed as an easy with for Republicans.
