LONDON (MNI) – UK mortgage approvals nudged up in April from March,
rising to their highest level so far this year but still well below late
2009 outturns.
The number of approvals for house purchases in April climbed to
35,729 from 35,044 in March, a 2% rise on the month. While this was
above any monthly outturn in 2010, it was still 22% down on the 45,822
seen in December last year.
BBA statistics director, David Dooks, said “Household priorities
are clearly reflected in these latest data, with people paying down debt
rather than building up savings.”
“Uncertainties about the impact of government policies and the
economy on households and businesses will continue to dent consumer
confidence and influence decision-making,” Dooks added.
