The speaker of the Ukranian parliament has announced the collapse of the governing coalition. The coalition, which had been pro-Western, was made up of parties loyal to President Victor Yushchenko and his political partner Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. However Yushchenko and Tymoshenko have been on a collision course for sometime now and the final straw would appear to have been Yushchenko accusing Tymoshenko of failing to condemn Russia’s war in Georgia. This political uncertainty in the Ukraine couldn’t come at a worse time, given the ongoing tensions between Russia and the West over Georgia.
